Pieter Janse Hagewout, his wife and four children, from Drenthe, immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1660. He purchased a house in Flatbush in 1661 and died before October 1662. Descendants lived in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. Many of the descendants of the elder son, Leffert Hagewout, adopted the patronymic Lefferts as a surname. Other descendants used the surname Hagewout, Haughwout, Haughawout, or Houghwout.
