With an insane mother and an absent father, Gretchen grows up in foster care. Facing discrimination in school, she retreats into her studies and her birds. When a special bird leads her a talking tree spirit, whom she rescues, she is pursued by pale hunters and must go underground, question her sanity, and make the greatest sacrifice of her life.
